Breast Cancer Program

Breast Cancer Program

The decision of where to be treated for cancer is an important one, for you and your family. Our dedicated cancer specialists provide the expertise, guidance and personalized support you need. Our multidisciplinary case conference gives every patient the benefit of input from many experts, all helping to design a cancer treatment plan that provides evidence-based therapies to offer the best possible outcome.

We offer comprehensive cancer services at three locations: The C. Anthony and Jean Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital, the Praxair Cancer at Danbury Hospital, and the Diebold Family Cancer Center at New Milford Hospital.

Breast Cancer Screening Saves Lives

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women; it is also one of the most treatable diseases when caught early. We encourage all women to have a discussion with their healthcare provider to review risk and benefits, as well as personal preferences, in order to create the best timeline for their screening.

We offer the latest in mammography and diagnostic procedures for all breast cancer needs:

  • Digital mammogram
  • 2-D mammogram/tomosynthesis
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Breast MRI
  • Breast density software

Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Evaluation for breast cancer includes review of imaging exams, medical history and a clinical exam including a breast exam. Breast tissue must be evaluated to obtain a diagnosis of breast cancer. Types of biopsies include:

  • Core needle biopsy
  • Fine needle biopsy/aspiration
  • Excisional or open biopsy
  • PET/CT scan
  • Bone scan

Breast Cancer Treatment

Our Western Connecticut Health Network physicians provide personalized cancer treatment based on your specific diagnosis. Factors weighed in identifying the optimal treatment for each patient include the type and stage of your cancer, along with your own treatment goals and lifestyle.

Each patient diagnosed with breast cancer benefits from review by our multidisciplinary (full team) case conferences. Together the team arrives at a personalized treatment plan.

Support During and After Treatment

A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming for patients and their loved ones.  Our support staff includes oncology trained social workers and therapists, nurse navigators, financial navigators, oncology nurses, oncology dietitians, radiation therapists and others. We offer many supportive services to help with the questions and concerns that may arise during treatment, and beyond, in your life as a survivor of cancer.
