Norwalk Hospital has announced the appointment of Benjamin Greenblatt, M.D., as chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine. “We are thrilled to have someone of Dr. Greenblatt’s experience in both pediatric and adult emergency medicine to lead our program at Norwalk Hospital,” said Dr. Lewis Berman, vice president of Medical Affairs at Norwalk Hospital. “He possesses the essential skills and experience going forward that will foster the transformation and future of emergency medicine services across our region.”
Dr. Greenblatt was associate chairman of Emergency Medicine, and director of the observation service or clinical decision unit (CDU) at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC) in New Hyde Park, New York. In addition he had an appointment as assistant professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Hofstra-North Shore University Hospital Medical School. Dr. Greenblatt served in a number of administrative roles and academic roles during his 13 year tenure at North Shore-LIJ health System. While at Forest Hills Hospital at NSLIJ a similarly sized community hospital to Norwalk Hospital, he also worked as associate director of Emergency Medicine and served as president, vice president and treasurer of the Medical Staff. In addition to his work at tertiary and communities hospitals Dr. Greenblatt helped to launch one the first NS-LIJ Medical Group’s Urgent Cares as medical director.
Dr. Greenblatt’s interest since residency had been with international emergency medicine having lectured globally and having arranged curriculums for visiting international physicians.
Dr. Greenblatt earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey and a medical degree from UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey. He also completed his internship and residency training at Bellevue Hospital/New York University Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Greenblatt is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.
A board certified emergency physician with extensive operational experience in Emergency Medicine, Dr. Greenblatt’s arrival comes at a most exciting and historic time for Norwalk Hospital. In late spring, the Hospital will celebrate the grand opening of its newly constructed 32,000 square-foot Bauer Emergency Care Center. As a Level II Trauma Center, Norwalk Hospital has the equipment, facilities and expertise needed to support advanced trauma care. “Norwalk Hospital has an incredibly dedicated group of physicians, nurses, medics, and ancillary staff and it’s truly an honor to be joining them. The expansion and incredible upgrade of the emergency department will make this the regional destination for patient’s needs under one roof 24 hours a day 7 days a week,” says Dr. Greenblatt. He also added that “… patients’ can count on being taken care of quickly and with compassion by board certified emergency physician ready to handle your critical and urgent care needs.” He further explained, “We are instituting the most advanced practices in patient flow with a goal to see patients in less than 30 minutes upon arrival to the emergency department.”
