Pack Your Own
Did you know you can bring your own food and water on a flight? Simply bring an empty water bottle through security and fill it at a water fountain once you’re cleared. You can also bring food as long as it is packaged in a clear container, bag, or plastic wrap so security can easily see what is inside. Just be sure you don’t bring liquids, like jellies and sauces, or any quantities exceeding three ounces. Snacks like nuts and granola bars can easily be toted around in your bag and make for healthy, delicious snacking when you’re on the go.
Enjoy – Just Choose Smart
Of course vacations are to be enjoyed. You don’t want to deprive yourself while you’re away, but on the other hand you don’t want to ruin all your efforts at eating healthy and feeling great by completely going overboard.
To help steer you toward some healthier choices without feeling deprived, try these eatsmart techniques:
- At a restaurant: There are simple swaps you can make to increase the healthy factor at a restaurant. If the meal comes with fries, swap them for another side like veggies or at least a small baked potato. Keep fatty dressings and sauces to a minimum or ask for them on the side.
- In your room: Buy a few healthy snacks and keep them in your room to nibble on instead of buying that bowl of ice cream or mound of french fries at poolside.
- At the bar: Don’t deny yourself the indulgence of a few drinks, but do keep mixers and sugary syrups to a minimum since they tend to be loaded with empty calories. Use flavored seltzer water or real fruit juices as mixers and ask if they have mint, ginger, fruit slices, and honey to flavor your drinks instead.
You don’t need access to a gym to fit in a workout. Vacation can actually be a great time to stay active without even realizing it! Try a run on the beach, scuba diving, biking, kayaking, swimming, etc. You can even make up fun games to be played in the sand. Games that involve running on the sand boosts strength and can torch some serious calories. You can also get in some extra physical activity by walking to a restaurant for dinner or make an effort to get up and go for a walk if you’ve been lounging for some time.
